Cleansing and Intoxification

To be clear, the matter of colon cleansing hasn’t been thoroughly and deeply scrutinized by modern scientists. Therefore the current conclusion is inconclusive. There is not enough research to come up with definite proof that colon cleansing does or doesn’t prevent terminal diseases.

So, what is true?

We, the average adults, each own a long muscular tube 3 to 4 feet long. And this tube we call the colon, and also the large intestine, is the 2nd last destination of every bit of food we consume. The last being the toilet. Waste has two choices: leave the body or stay. This gives us two routes: to go or not to go. Even if we were to go, have we gone thoroughly?

What am I talking about?

The practice and theories about colon cleansing trace back to the ancient belief of auto-intoxification, that undigested food causes mucus buildup, which produces toxins that enter the blood circulation and poison other organs, which leads to disease. Our history tells of two fundamental colon cleansing methods: colonic hydrotherapy/irrigation administered by professionals, and self-administered liquid supplementations with ingredients like enemas, laxatives, herbal teas and enzymes. Either preferences can be tedious and uncomfortable or simpler and easier for anybody.

Many scientists and doctors don’t recommend colon cleansing because the digestive system and bowel naturally performs this task. Sometimes, improper cleansing may even harm the tissues of the digestive tract and cause cramping, bloating, nausea, mineral imbalance, dehydration, perforations, infections, depletion of probiotics and changes of electrolytes. Therefore, this method of detoxification is not prescribed for diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, hemorrhoids, etc., basically those already diagnosed with severe heart, kidney or colon diseases, and of course children.

On the other hand, health professionals do believe that the accumulation of toxins can cause a variety of problems, such as arthritis, allergies, asthma, fatigue, headache, weight gain, and low energy. And they believe that removing toxins promotes intestinal health and good bacteria growth, enhances the energy source and immune system. Some researchers, finding enemas to relieve constipation symptoms, theorize that toxins’ impact on the nervous system is the true link to bowel regularity.

Now, let’s review.

Science says that the digestive and bowel system naturally performs colon cleansing and that further cleansing may cause harm, especially to those with severe colon-related diseases. Science also seems to say that we have a very long, complex digestive system and undigested food causes toxins, which does not benefit and may risk our intestinal and immune health, which may eventually accumulate into severe colon-related diseases.
